SUMMER STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM -- CAMBODIA & THAILAND (Dates TBD -- w/ Dr. Helen Delfeld, Political Science)
Description: This 6 credit hour study abroad experience has been designed to provide students with an opportunity to explore and experience first-hand two countries --Cambodia and Thailand -- one of which has experienced genocide, the other of which has more successfully negotiated the post-colonial world, but both struggle to meet the needs of their people. We will explore how histories of violence (the evidence of which is still ever-present) become incorporated into people's individual and collective cultural narratives and how the underlying political, social, and psychological forces have shaped (and continue to shape) these cultures as they grapple with the barriers to healthy functioning and well-being associated with poor living conditions. We will also explore various levels at which these cultures make better lives for themselves and their children, through individual and community efforts, governmental programs, and foreign influence in particular the UN and NGOs.
